Sound Analysis Software Development

Ofer Tchernichovski

CCNY, The City University of New York

Over the last 8 years, Zettatronic developed a collection of recording and analysis software tools for our laboratory, who then distributed those to a large scientific community that study brain, learning and behavior.

The tools developed by Zettatronic were included in the Sound Analysis Pro package. More than 100 laboratories are using those tools and several discoveries were made and published in the best scientific journals including Nature.

The software tools developed by Zettatronic are efficient, robust and elegant. It allows us to record and analyze sound and brain signal simultaneously across several channels.

The image below demonstrates some of the power of these tools:

Sound Analysis Pro

This is one Digital Signal Processing (DSP) recording channel developed by the Zettatronic programmer David Swigger. This software tool was used to discover how sleep affect learning in young songbirds (this discovery was published in Nature). As shown, the channel record and analyze sounds (green trace) in real time. The red dotted line present a threshold, and the text show how the DSP information is processed to allow automatic interactions with the animals (yet another component developed by David Swigger).

The CCNY Laboratory of Animal Behavior would like to thank David and Zettatronic in the name of a large scientific community that gain from using those tools. Working with Zettatronic is a real pleasure. The service is always prompt, the software quality is top notch, and the interactions with the team are outstanding.

Thank you!
